This data center was engineered as part of a larger tenant fit-out project in a commercial office building. The structural challenges for this particular project were unique - support for the superimposed loads created by the server racks had to be accomplished by suspending steel platforms from the structural frame above rather than, as is usually the case, from below. Shmerykowsky designed a structural system whereby tension rods connected to the steel above the data center floor and then supported platforms on which the server racks could stand. This arrangement, though determined by structural efficiency, also had the advantage of naturally creating raised floor space, which is helpful in any data center environment.
